FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is fibre important for my cat’s nutrition?

When choosing a pet food, fibre is an important consideration, but remember that the needs of cats are not the same as those of humans. A moderate level of moderately fermentable fibre, such as beet pulp, provides proven nutritional benefits for cats. Cat diets containing high levels of poorly fermentable fibre dilute calories and deprive cats of the nutrients they need. Learn More

What nutrients are important for my cat’s skin and coat?

Vitamins and minerals are essential for the development of healthy skin and hair coat. The best way to provide these nutrients is through a complete and balanced diet containing appropriate amounts of essential vitamins and minerals rather than through supplements.

Why is my cat a picky eater?

Is your cat really a finicky eater, or could it be something else? There are many factors to consider when you notice that your cat isn’t eating as usual. If this occurs, take a closer look at exactly what your cat is eating during a day's time. Does he or she eat just a few table scraps or treats? These extras can drastically alter your cat's normal intake of cat food. It is similar to the feeling you get after eating too much candy or potato chips. Are you interested in a full meal afterward? Neither is your cat.

Is chicken a good source of protein for my cat?

Chicken is a key ingredient in IAMS® cat food. Its protein can help maintain healthy muscle structure, and it naturally provides each of the amino acids essential to carnivorous animals. And chicken adds great taste. Dried (meal) chicken protein sources contained in our chicken-based cat foods undergo an extra refining process and contain each of the amino acids that are essential to cats.

How do antioxidants help my cat?

Antioxidants are important, naturally occurring nutrients that help maintain health by slowing the destructive aging process of cellular molecules. Antioxidants also can be important in improving immune responses and vaccine recognition in dogs and cats. This may be especially critical for young animals that are being vaccinated while their immune system is still developing. Antioxidants can reverse decreases in immune-cell function for senior dogs and cats. A blend of several antioxidants in moderate amounts may be more effective than high levels of one antioxidant.

How do I safely change my cat’s food?

Introduce the new food gradually. This is the most successful way to ease your cat into the diet change. Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% current food. Slowly change the proportions over the next three days or so by gradually increasing the amount of new food and decreasing the amount of current food. At the end of this weaning process, you should be feeding 100% of the new food. You may encounter difficulties; for example, your cat might choose to eat only the old food, or not eat at all. However, a healthy cat can miss meals for a day or two with no ill effects.
